CHAPTER 5

Sara parked the car outside the forensics’ lab and, along with a very reluctant Carla, entered the building.

A man in a white coat appeared once the bell sounded on the door. He smiled, recognising them both. “Hi. What can I do for you today, Inspector?”

“I have a favour to ask.”

“Shoot, what do you need?”

Sara tapped the disc against her palm. “I have very grainy CCTV footage that I need tweaking. How are you fixed?”

“Hmm… let me think. How about if I get it back to you by late afternoon tomorrow?”

“That would be excellent.” Sara handed over the disc and said, “Any chance you can make a duplicate copy now, enabling us to show the rest of the team what we’ve discovered?”

“It shouldn’t be a problem. I’ll be back in a couple of minutes.”

The man took the disc and walked a few paces down the hallway to the first room on the right. Sara was tempted to join him but managed to suppress the urge. Instead, she nervously paced the area, much to Carla’s annoyance.

“Stand still, you’re doing my head in going around in circles. It’s making me feel dizzy.”

“Sorry. You know what I’m like, I can’t keep still for long.”

“No shit! Ah, here he is now.”

Sara spun around and smiled at the technician whose name she had temporarily forgotten. He handed her the disc case with a smile.

“There you go, all copied. I’ll do my best to get the other disc back to you tomorrow. Of course, if something urgent arises in the meantime, that will need to take priority.”

“I understand. Do you know if Lorraine is around?”

“Yes, she’s carrying out the post-mortem on the latest victim. I’m sure she won’t mind if you go through.”

“Thanks, we might as well drop by and see her while we’re here.”

“Feel free. You know the way.”

“We do. Do you need us to sign in?”

“You’d better, to be on the safe side, in case there’s a fire while you’re here.”

“Christ, don’t say that.”

They walked over to the reception desk, and he pulled out the visitors’ book for both of them to sign. Then he bid them farewell, leaving them to find their own way to the mortuary, which wasn’t a problem as they’d visited it hundreds of times before over the years.

Lorraine’s office was empty, as expected, so they carried on down the corridor to the autopsy suite which Lorraine preferred to call her ‘theatre’, where she performed miracles with the dead bodies that came her way, interpreting the more intricate details of their deaths which ultimately aided the investigation teams.

She looked up and waved a bloody gloved hand at them. Then she shouted, “Do you want to come in and join me?”

“Not particularly,” Carla muttered beside Sara.

Sara dug her partner in the ribs. “Get away with you. Where’s your sense of adventure gone?”

“Umm… it’s packed a bag and set off on its own.”

Sara chortled. “Silly bugger. Come on, let’s get togged up.” She raised a thumb at Lorraine and held up three fingers.
